Karmapa to receive Kalachakra initiations in Washington, DC

Dharamshala: The 17th Gyalwang Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje will be leaving today for the United States of America to receive Kalachakra initiations from His Holiness the Dalai Lama

Speaking to phayul.com, Mr Karma Chugyalpa, deputy general secretary of Karmapa’s office of administration, Tsurphu Labrang confirmed the visit.

“Gyalwang Karmapa will be visiting Washington, DC to receive the Kalachakra initiations from His Holiness the Dalai Lama”, Mr Chugyalpa told phayul.com.

The Indian government had on July 5 given the go ahead for the two-week long visit.

“Following the Kalachakra initiations, Gyalwang Karmapa is scheduled to visit the Karma Triyana Dharamchakra centre in New York at the centre’s request”, Mr Chugyalpa said.

This would be the second overseas visit of Gyalwang Karmapa after his earlier visit to the United States in 2008 during which he visited New York, Boulder and Seattle.

The 17th Karmapa who turned 26 last month has been living in Dharamshala, northern India since he made a daring escape from Tibet in 2000 after Chinese authorities increasingly restricted his ability to travel and teach his disciples, and to receive transmissions from his lineage teachers.

This move by the Indian government giving a green signal to Gyalwang Karmapa’s visit is seen by many as a vindication of Karmapa’s innocence in a recent media backlash surrounding the Tsurphu Labrang’s management of funds.
