Tibetan Youth Self-immolates in Ngaba Raising the Toll to 124
Kunchok Tseten, a 30 year old Tibetan man has set himself ablaze in Meruma town of Ngaba County, Sichuan Province on December 3, 2013.
A VOA Tibetan source from India has reported that Kunchok Tseten shouted slogans demanding for the return of the Dalai Lama to Tibet and the reunification of Tibetans inside Tibet and exile before collapsing few meters away.
The source also said that the Chinese armed forces immediately surrounded Tseten within few minutes of the incident. Tibetans preventing the officials from confiscating the body was arrested along with Tseten’s wife Namnang 28, and a few of his relatives, whose current situation remain unknown.
Following the incident, the businesses in town were forced to shut down, and Tibetan’s cell phones were confiscated as security across the region heightened.
The total number of known self-immolators inside Tibet to protest China’s repressive policies towards Tibetan has risen to 124 since February 2009.
