Geneva: Tibet’s longest political prisoner Tanak Jigme Sangpo was cremated today with honours and prayers in Winterthur, Switzerland. His casket was wrapped in the Tibetan National flag as a mark of respect and honour for all the sacrifices and sufferings he endured for the freedom of his homeland, Tibet.

Tributes poured in from around the world on Saturday as word spread that the former Tibetan political prisoner who spent almost half his life in Chinese prison and had spent the remaining in exile relentlessly advocating of the Tibetan cause had died at the age of 91.

At the request of individuals and groups from around the world, His Holiness the Dalai Lama has graciously consented to give a two-day teaching on Chapters 1 and 4 of Nagarjuna's "Precious Garland (rinchen trengwa)" from 8 am to 9.30 am (Indian Standard Time) on May 16 (Saturday) & May 17 (Sunday), 2020. His Holiness has also been requested to provide general advice appropriate to these challenging times. Those interested may watch the live webcast of the teachings and listen to them in Tibetan, English, Chinese and other languages on the official websites and Facebook pages of the Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. When watching the webcasts, viewers are earnestly requested to observe the social distancing protocols recommended wherever they live.

This year marks the 25th year of the enforced disappearance of Tibet’s 11th Panchen Lama Gedhun Choekyi Nyima and his entire family by the Chinese Communist Party. In this regard, 159 organizations submitted a joint petition to the United Nations urging it to press China for the immediate release of the 11th Panchen Lama, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima and his entire family.

Zurich, 20 March 2020 – The Gaden Phodrang Foundation of the Dalai Lama (GPFDL) is pleased to announce a ninth round of “The Dalai Lama Graduate Scholarship” (DLG Scholarship) for the upcoming academic year 2020/21. The program, established in 2011, grants every year scholarships for full-time Tibetan graduate students studying in Australia, Europe and the Americas for the pursuit of Master’s and Doctoral degrees. A scholarship grant of up to USD 10,000 will be awarded to 10 to 18 exceptional candidates as a supplementary bursary.

The Swiss government has called the Coronavirus epidemic as an 'exceptional situation' as it banned all public and social gatherings in order to slow down the spread of new infections amongst its citizens.

The 61st commemoration of the 10th March Tibetan National Uprising Day was held in the Swiss capital of Bern at Helvetiaplatz on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.
